Well, let me tell you, these newfangled things called tablets, they’re something else. My grandson, he got one, and he’s always on it. He says you can put this thing called Linux on it, makes it work like a computer, he says. I don’t know about all that, but I reckon it’s worth a look-see. Now, I heard there’s different kinds of this Linux. Like different kinds of beans, I guess. There’s one called Ubuntu, that’s a popular one. Heard some folks say good things about Ubuntu Touch. They say it is easy to use. Then there’s something called LuneOS, PostmarketOS and Mobian. My grandson showed me a thing about these “distros” they are called. Lots of choices, just gotta pick the one that suits you, I reckon. Just like picking which dress to wear, gotta find one that fits just right.
Then comes the tricky part, getting it on there. That’s like canning, gotta follow the steps just right or it’ll all go bad. My grandson says there are these things called “apps,” little programs that help you put Linux on your tablet. AndroNix is one I heard of. And Termux. Sounds like a space movie. And another one called VNC Viewer. Don’t ask me what that means. I am just an old lady. I just use them to call my children. Anyway, these apps supposedly make it easier.
If you ain’t got your tablet “jailbroken” – that’s what they call it when you mess with the insides, like taking apart a clock, I guess – then you gotta use these apps. If you did jailbreak it, well, I don’t know, that’s a whole other can of worms. My grandson, he’s always talking about “rooting” things. Sounds like something you do with pigs, not tablets. But he says it gives you more control. I say it sounds like a good way to break something expensive.
Once you get Linux on there, they say you can do all sorts of things. Like having a whole computer right there in your hands. You can use all them Linux “apps and utilities” whatever those are. It is said that you can even use it like a regular computer with a keyboard and mouse. They say it is good.
Now, some tablets come with this Linux already on them. That’s like buying bread already baked, saves you the trouble. But most of ’em come with that other thing, what’s it called… Windows. My grandson says Windows 10 is what most of them have. But he says you can still put Linux on them, just takes a bit more work. Like having to weed the garden before you can plant your flowers.
Here are some things I heard you should think about when you are picking out a Linux tablet:
- How much it costs: Some are cheap, some are expensive. Just like chickens, some lay more eggs than others, I suppose.
- How big the screen is: Gotta be able to see what you’re doing, right?
- How long the battery lasts: Don’t want it dying on you in the middle of something important, like a phone call with your grandkids.
- How fast it is: My grandson says this is important for doing things quickly. He calls it “processing power.” Sounds like making sausage to me.
I heard there are some good ones out there. My grandson, he’s always talking about this one and that one. But you gotta do your own looking, see what fits your needs. Just like finding a good pair of shoes, gotta try them on before you buy them. This is what you need to think about if you want Linux for tablet computers.
