Alright, listen up, y’all. We’re gonna talk about them “krita alternatives” today. Don’t know what “krita” is? Well, it’s some fancy-schmancy picture makin’ program. But, hey, not everyone’s got the money or the know-how for that fancy stuff, right?
So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ else, somethin’ maybe a bit easier on the pocketbook or simpler to use, then you’ve come to the right place. I’m gonna tell you ’bout some other picture makin’ programs that are just as good, or maybe even better, depends on what you’re lookin’ for, I reckon.
First off, there’s this thing called GIMP. Sounds like somethin’ you’d say if you stubbed your toe, but it’s a real good program. It’s free, which is always a good thing in my book. You can get it on all sorts of computers, too – them Mac things, Windows, even that Linux stuff the young’uns are always talkin’ about. They say it’s “open source” which I guess means anybody can fiddle with it.
Now, GIMP, it can do just about anythin’ you want with pictures. You can draw, paint, fix up old photos, make them fancy designs – you name it. It’s a bit complicated, mind you, just like that Krita thing. But if you got the patience, you can learn to do some mighty fine work with it.

Then there’s this other one called Sketchbook. Now, that sounds a bit more friendly, doesn’t it? It’s like them books the kids use to draw in, only it’s on the computer. This one’s good for drawin’ and paintin’, and it’s a bit easier to use than GIMP, I hear. They say it’s got a nice design, easy on the eyes, you know? Not all cluttered up with buttons and thingamajigs.
Sketchbook ain’t free, though, not always. They got some free versions, but if you want all the bells and whistles, you gotta pay up. But sometimes that’s worth it, if it saves you a headache, right? It’s all about what you need and what you’re willin’ to spend.
Another one they talk about is ArtRage. Sounds like somethin’ you’d feel when the cow gets loose, but it’s another picture program. This one’s supposed to be real good at makin’ pictures that look like they were painted with real paints, you know, the kind you gotta mix up yourself? It’s got all sorts of fancy brushes and textures to make your pictures look real purdy. This one costs money too, but if you’re serious about your paintin’, it might be worth lookin’ into.
Now, there’s more of ‘em, too. I heard tell of Procreate and PaintTool SAI. Folks say Procreate is good if you got one of them iPad things, but I ain’t never messed with them. PaintTool SAI, now that sounds like somethin’ from Japan, and they always make good stuff over there. This one’s supposed to be good for drawin’ them cartoon characters, like the ones the grandkids watch.
Some folks use these picture programs for all sorts of things. They make them comic books, draw pictures for stories, make fancy backgrounds for them computer games – all sorts of stuff. Krita’s good for that, they say, but these other ones can do it too. It’s just a matter of finding the one that fits you best.
Some of these programs are easier to learn than others. Like I said, GIMP is powerful but hard to master. Sketchbook’s a bit easier, and I reckon some of the others are too. It just depends on what you’re used to. And what you need it for, too. If you’re just fixin’ up a few pictures from the family reunion, you don’t need somethin’ fancy. But if you’re tryin’ to make a livin’ with your pictures, well, then you might need somethin’ with all the bells and whistles. Some let you switch from drawing to vectors, whatever that is. Fancy stuff, I tell ya.
And don’t forget, you can always find help online. Them young’uns, they know everything about computers, and they’re always willin’ to share what they know. Just type in what you’re lookin’ for, and you’ll find all sorts of videos and articles and whatnot. Just be careful, though, there’s a lot of nonsense out there too.
So, there you have it. A few different picture programs that you can use instead of that Krita thing. They all got their own good points and bad points, but they can all help you make some mighty fine pictures. Just gotta find the one that suits you, just like findin’ the right pair of boots. It takes some time, but it’s worth it in the end.
