Okay, so I wanted to get better at using Keynote, specifically to speed up my workflow. I figured learning some keyboard shortcuts would be the way to go. So, I started by, well, just using Keynote more!
Diving into Keynote Shortcuts
First, I opened a recent presentation I’d been working on. I decided to just start messing around and see what I could figure out on my own. I knew the basic ones, like Command+C for copy and Command+V for paste, but I wanted more.

I started with object manipulation. I found that holding down Command and dragging an object lets you move it freely, ignoring the grid. Nice! Then I discovered that adding Shift to that (Command+Shift+Drag) lets you move objects perfectly horizontally or vertically. Even better!
Next, I wanted to learn how to group and ungroup objects quickly. I played around and found that Command+Option+G groups selected objects, and Command+Option+Shift+G ungroups them. Super handy for organizing complex slides.

I spent some time messing with text too. Everyone knows Command+B for bold, Command+I for italics, and Command+U for underline, but I also discovered Command+Shift+Plus(+) to increase the font size and Command+Shift+Minus(-) to make it smaller. Felt pretty powerful doing that!
Then I jumped into presentation mode shortcuts. I knew that the arrow keys would move me forward and back through slides, but I learned that pressing “B” would black out the screen, and “W” would white it out. Perfect for those moments when you need to focus the audience’s attention back on you.
My Practice Routine
After my initial exploration, I decided to be a bit more systematic. I looked up a list of Keynote shortcuts online (there are tons of resources out there!) and picked out a handful that I thought would be most useful for me.
I spent about 15 minutes each day just practicing those specific shortcuts. I’d open a blank presentation, add some shapes and text, and then just practice grouping, ungrouping, resizing, moving, and formatting them using only the keyboard. It was a little tedious at first, but I started to get the hang of it pretty quickly.
It’s still a work in progress, but I’m definitely feeling more efficient in Keynote. I’m not constantly reaching for the mouse anymore, and I can feel my workflow speeding up. It’s like learning a new language – the more you practice, the more fluent you become!
