This computer thing, sometimes it just don’t work right. Like that network adapter, what the heck is that anyway? It’s supposed to make the internet work, I think. But sometimes, it just sits there, doing nothing. Makes me wanna throw it out the window! But then I gotta fix it, ’cause how else am I gonna see what them young’uns are up to online?
So, I asked around, and folks told me a few things. They say you gotta check this thing, that thing. It’s all a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me. But I try my best. I hear if the thing broken, you see a yellow mark. What the hell is a yellow mark, I don’t know. I just click around, hoping for the best.
First, they say click that “Start” button. I know that one, it’s always there in the corner. Then you gotta find something called “Computer.” I always see that one too, it’s got a picture of a little box. You gotta right-click it, whatever that means. I just click both buttons until something happens. Then click “Properties.” Sounds important, like owning land or something.
Then you gotta find “Device Manager.” What kind of manager is that? Is it like the manager at the grocery store? Anyway, you click that. And then you look for “Network adapters.” It sounds so complicated, like something you put on a car to make it go faster. Like my old Betsy. She need a good adapter for her carburetor. If there’s a little yellow thing next to it, like a question mark or one of them ‘sclamation marks, then you got a problem. A big problem. If not then you are fine. You see nothing you are fine.
Another thing they told me, you can type “settings” somewhere. I guess it’s like setting the table, but for the computer. You type it in that little box where you can type things. Then you click on something called “Network & internet.” That sounds right, ’cause we’re trying to fix the internet, ain’t we? They say the status, whatever that is, will show up at the top. Like the top of the mountain. Like if the thing work, it will show. If not, then it won’t show.
And then there’s this other thing, a “troubleshooter.” Sounds like someone who makes trouble, but I guess it’s supposed to fix trouble. You type “network troubleshooter” in that same box. Then you click on something called “Identify and repair network problems.” It’s like when my old dog got lost, I had to identify him and then bring him back home. I had to repair our relationship after that.
Then you gotta follow the instructions, whatever they are. Just like following a recipe, I guess. You wait for the thing to finish, like waiting for bread to bake. Patience, that’s what they say. I ain’t got much of that, but I try. I am waiting, and waiting and waiting.
Now, some folks talk about this “WiFi driver” thing. Driver like driving a car. They just can’t talk normal! I guess it’s something that makes the network adapter work right, like a key to start the engine. They say checking it in Windows 10 is easy. Windows 10, that’s the kind of computer I got, I think. They all look the same to me, just boxes with screens.
They say it’s important to check your driver to make sure your internet work good. You don’t want slow internet. That’s like waiting all day for the mailman to come by. I need the fast stuff. I need the fast network adapter working. So I can see what’s going on in the world.

And I heard someone say something about a wireless network, that’s for the internet without wires. It don’t make no sense. How can you have internet without no wires? They say you can check it on Windows 10 too. That’s good. I hope that thing don’t break, then I will be in a real pickle. I will have no internet at all. If your network adapter fail, then that’s bad. You gotta know how to fix it.
This whole computer thing is a mystery to me. But I gotta learn, I guess. The world’s changing, and you gotta keep up, even if it’s hard. Just like learning to use that newfangled microwave oven. Took me a while, but I got it now. This network adapter thing, though, it’s a tough one. But I’ll figure it out. I always do. Just need a little help from my neighbors, and a whole lot of patience.
