Alright, let’s gab about this “easy technology” stuff. Now, I ain’t no fancy city slicker, but even I can see these things are poppin’ up everywhere. They call ’em “smart devices,” like they got brains or somethin’. Sounds kinda crazy, right? But lemme tell ya, some of it’s actually pretty handy, even for an old gal like me.
First off, they got these phones, “smartphones” they call ’em. Everyone’s got one glued to their hand these days. I ain’t got one myself, too much fuss for me, but my grandkids, they can’t live without ’em. They use ’em for everything! Callin’, takin’ pictures, playin’ games. Heck, they even use ’em to pay for stuff! Seems like magic to me.
Then there’s these “smart speakers.” You just talk to ’em and they play music, tell you the weather, even order groceries! Can you believe that? My neighbor, she got one. She just hollers at it and it does what she says. Kinda spooky if you ask me, but she swears it makes her life easier.
- Plays music
- Orders stuff
- Tells you the weather
And the cars! They got “smart cars” now too. They can park themselves, keep you from bumpin’ into things, even drive themselves in some places! Now that’s somethin’ I can’t wrap my head around. A car drivin’ itself! What will they think of next? My son-in-law, he’s always talkin’ about gettin’ one. He says it’ll make his commute easier. I say, just pay attention to the road, that’s all you need!
But it ain’t all fancy cars and talking speakers. Some of this “easy technology” is actually useful around the house. They got these “smart thermostats,” you can control the heatin’ and air conditionin’ from your phone. So, if you forget to turn down the heat before you leave, you can do it from anywhere. Saves you money on them bills, which is always a good thing. They also have “smart doorbells” where you can see who’s at your door even if you ain’t home. And them “smart locks”? You don’t even need a key no more, just punch in a code! It’s kinda like livin’ in one of them sci-fi movies.
And get this, they even got “smart refrigerators”! These things can tell you when you’re runnin’ low on milk, or if your eggs are about to go bad. Now, I dunno about you, but I can tell when my milk’s gone sour just by smellin’ it. But I guess for some folks, it’s helpful. They got “tablets” too, big ol’ phones almost. And watches that do all sorts of things, like tell your heartbeat and how many steps you took! My granddaughter got one of those, says it helps her stay healthy.
Now, if you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ into all this stuff, don’t go spendin’ all your hard-earned money at once. Start small, they say. You can get them “smart plugs” and light bulbs first. They ain’t too expensive and they’re easy to set up. Just plug ’em in and you can control your lights with your phone. See how you like it. Then maybe you can get one of them “smart speakers” or a “hub” to control everything from one place. And if you’re really fancy, you can get them “smart thermostats” or even security cameras. Just be careful not to go overboard, these things can get addictive, you know.
And it ain’t just for houses, neither. They use this stuff in big buildings too. You know, for the lights, the heatin’, the air conditionin’, and even for keepin’ the place safe. It’s all about makin’ things easier and safer, I guess. Take them Arlo cameras for example. They say you can see everything that’s going on around your house and it even has a spotlight. I don’t know nothing about that, but it sure sounds fancy. They help you see what’s going on and keep things secure.
So, there you have it. My take on this “easy technology” stuff. Some of it’s kinda silly, some of it’s kinda useful, but it’s all around us. And it ain’t goin’ away anytime soon. So, maybe it’s time we all started payin’ a little more attention to it. Who knows, maybe even this old gal will learn a thing or two. But don’t expect me to start drivin’ a car that talks to me, that’s just plain crazy talk.
