Alright, listen up, y’all. Gonna tell ya ’bout this AUR thingy, whatever they call it. Sounds fancy, but it ain’t that hard, even for an old gal like me.
So, first off, they say you gotta get some tools. Tools for what? For gettin’ stuff, that’s what! Think of it like gettin’ your gardenin’ tools ready ‘fore you plant them taters. They got this “helper” thing, a helper tool, like a young’un helpin’ you dig. This helper thing, it lets you look for stuff and put it on your… uh… computer, I guess. They call it “installin’,” sounds like puttin’ up shelves, but it’s for computer stuff.
- First, you get that helper tool.
- Then, you tell it what you want.
- It goes and finds it for ya.
- Then, you say “yes” – like agreein’ to buy somethin’ from the market.
- And bam! It puts it on your computer.
They got this other way too, somethin’ called “makepkg”. Sounds like makin’ a package to send to your grandkid, but it’s different. It’s like… you got a recipe, see? And this makepkg thing, it takes that recipe and makes you the… the pie, or whatever it is you wanted. You gotta type in some gibberish, somethin’ like “git clone” and then a bunch of other stuff. Don’t ask me what it means, it’s like speakin’ in tongues. But you type it in, and it gets the recipe for ya. Then you use that makepkg thing to “build” it, like bakin’ that pie.
Now, there’s this other place, a “web interface” they call it. Sounds like lookin’ through a window, but it’s on the computer. You can go there and look for stuff too. They got these “PKGBUILDs” there, more recipes, I guess. You take them recipes and use that makepkg thing again to make the… the pie, or whatever it is.
They keep talkin’ ‘bout “packages.” Packages this, packages that. Back in my day, a package was a box of sugar or somethin’. Now, it’s all this computer stuff. Makes an old lady’s head spin, I tell ya. But you gotta keep up, or you get left behind like a stray dog on the highway.
And another thing, they say you gotta be careful. Test things out, they say. Make sure it works, like tastin’ that pie before you serve it to the preacher. And if somethin’s broke, you gotta tell ‘em, so they can fix it. Sounds like complainin’ to the store manager when your eggs are rotten, but it’s for computer stuff again.
They got all these rules and guidelines, too. Like followin’ the recipe, I guess. Can’t just throw anythin’ in that pie, gotta do it right. And use somethin’ called “POSIX shell compliant scripts,” sounds like writin’ in fancy cursive, but it’s for the computer again. Lord have mercy, all this newfangled talk!
So, that’s the gist of it, I reckon. Get the tools, find what you want, say yes, and put it on your computer. Or get the recipe, use the makepkg thing, and build it yourself. And be careful, test things out, and follow the rules. Just like cookin’ a good meal, only it’s for this computer thingamajig.
And don’t forget to donate to those young fellas makin’ them videos, they gotta make a livin’ too, even if all they do is talk about this computer stuff all day long. Seems like an easy job, but I reckon it ain’t. Just like farmin’, looks easy ‘til you try it yourself.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some real food, somethin’ I understand. All this talk about computers makes me hungry for a good ol’ fashioned apple pie.
